Bad ass blogging crimes

November 24, 2008

A day after Pesta Blogger and the celebration of Indonesia’s bloggers, seems our hoster WordPress has been called to help the Jakarta Police fight the heinous crimes going around on the interwebs- in this case, someone posting a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad.

It contradicts some law made this year by “disseminating information which would create rivalry among religious communities.” Apparently.

What’s really confused me is a quote by Jakarta City Police ( I’m getting this from tempointeraktif.com via the Jakarta Post):

City Police special crimes director Commissioner Raja Erizman said police had traced the website and found it was created outside Indonesia.

Hmmm. Maybe I is stupid, but couldn’t that make things a bit inconvenient for the city police, given they usually have jurisdiction limited to Jakarta? Let alone staying within Indonesia. They’re gonna be making some work for themselves if they’ve decided to apply Indonesian law to the whole of the crazy world of web. (more…)

Porn, scorn and prickly relationships

Durians

Durians

After spending two glorious weeks on the Island of the Gods and the Australian Tourist (Bali), I recently returned to the Big Durian. Overall, I discovered two things:

  1. I am moody no matter where I set foot — It has nothing to do with Jakarta. Maybe Jakarta has to put up with me as much I have to put up with it.
  2. For all its flaws, Jakarta is my home. There were flaws I would just have to accept.

Sexx Laws

October 30, 2008

Oh, Abu Bakar Bashir. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s your lips, cherry red, almost pulsing with sexuality. Your stare, beady, all knowing. Your lazy bedroom eye, oh, yes, point me in the right direction.  That hand, held ever so slightly effeminately, it keeps me wondering, you mystery man you.

So. Much. Desire. So. Very. Very. Illegal.

Yeah. So. New Pornography bill. Awesome stuff. It got passed today, in great urgency to protect woman and children.

In fact, Indonesia’s been so caught up in the banning of sexual desire that they’re still mulling over whether a 43-year-old Muslim cleric who married a 12-year-old girl called Ulfa has done anything wrong.

Moody in a manic city

September 22, 2008

I don’t know if it is the heat, nasi goreng, a constant yearning for the footpath or pollution messing with my serotonin, but I haven’t been able to hold a steady mood since I first arrived in this city. Tuesday, I was blue. Thursday, I was tickled pink. This weekend: a hyper-colour blur.

Dolly stressed out!

Today, I am stressed and I am crazy. When I have a lot of work on, I lug more onto the pile. Swallowed by stress and restricted by own perfectionism, I create deadlines where they needn’t exist just for the masochistic fun of it.

I’m too sexy for this porn bill

September 18, 2008

It looks like the anti-pornography bill that conservative parties in Indonesia have been trying to get passed, in various forms, over the last few years is going to make it this time round. It’s being hailed by its supporters as a gift to the people during the holy month.

The civil libertarians are up in (probably uncovered) arms about it. So, it’s going to affect tourism, impact on the rights of women, criminalize victims of prostitution and contravene human rights legislation. It could potentially outlaw poetry, works of art, literature — and bikinis in Bali.

Blah-di blah blah, I say.
